Teen denies charges in fatal Aurora crash

WHEATON — An Aurora teenager pleaded not guilty Monday to reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving charges in a crash that killed a Metea Valley High School student in October.
Logan Krogman, who turned 16 in November, stepped to the bench with two attorneys for the brief DuPage County Court hearing, where prosecutors formally announced the grand jury’s two-count indictment.
Krogman, who was 15 at the time of the crash and does not have a driver’s license, was behind the wheel of a 2012 Chevy Malibu around 1:45 a.m. on Oct. 23 when he lost control the car on the wet pavement of Stonebridge Drive, went airborne and smashed into a home on Hamman Way, according to authorities. Devin Meadows, 15, one of Krogman’s three passengers, died after being ejected from the vehicle. Meadows, also of Aurora, was not wearing a seat belt, police and prosecutors have said.
The indictment states Krogman, who did not speak at Monday’s hearing, was driving 90 mph in a 25-mph zone with “intent to get the vehicle to go 100 mph” at the time of the crash and failed to decrease the speed when approaching a curve on Stonebridge Drive.
Krogman and the other two teenage passengers suffered minor injuries.
Authorities previously said Krogman took his father’s car without permission prior to the crash and was on a “joyride” when it happened.
Krogman remains free on $75,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court Jan. 28.
The teen is charged as an adult. If convicted, he could be sentenced to prison, although probation is possible for both charges.
