Council ballot to reflect luck of the draw

Incumbency is no assurance of naming rights on the spring ballot for Naperville City Council seats.
None of the three sitting council members who hope to win new terms won spots near the top of the ballot when a lottery was held Thursday to establish the order in which the dozen office hopefuls’ names will appear.
The aspiring officials will pursue four spots in the consolidated election, set for April 9, 2013. If more than 16 prospective candidates had submitted nominating papers, the city would have conducted a primary on Feb. 26 to narrow the field.
Up for vote will be positions on municipal, township, park district, library district, school district and fire district boards and commissions. Current Naperville City Council members Judith Brodhead, Paul Hinterlong and Doug Krause are all seeking re-election. Councilman Kenn Miller’s seat also will be available, but Miller announced earlier this year that he won’t run again.
The first name voters will see on the spring ballot is that of David Wentz. Following Wentz, in this order, will be candidates Thomas Glass, Wayne Floegel, Jeff Davis, Kevin Coyne, Hinterlong, John Krummen, Krause, Bill Habel, Jo Malik, Tara Leigh Gregus and Brodhead.
According to city policy, the nominating documents submitted by people who were waiting in line outside the city clerk’s office when the filing period opened at 9 a.m. Nov. 19 are considered to have been simultaneously filed. Gregus and Brodhead turned in their papers later, so their ballot position reflects that timing.
