A woman who has been convicted at least twice of drunken driving faces a potential prison sentence, after being arrested again on that charge.
Miriam Mercado, 37, is being held in DuPage County Jail in Wheaton on $75,000 bail. She is to be tried on five charges, including a felony count of aggravated DUI with a suspended or revoked license.
Mercado lives on the 1300 block of Monomoy Street in Aurora. She was arrested about 1 a.m. Saturday during a routine traffic stop conducted by Naperville police.
Sgt. Lou Cammiso said a patrol officer watched as Mercado allegedly made an improper lane change while driving her gray, 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer south on Route 59 from McDowell Road on the city’s far northwest side. The officer followed the SUV and curbed it near the intersection of North Aurora Road and Route 59.
The officer took Mercado into custody after determining she was drunk, Cammiso said.
Records on file in Kane County Circuit Court indicated Aurora police in March 2008 stopped Mercado in her vehicle and charged her with aggravated DUI.
The charge was dismissed in July of that year, and Mercado instead was convicted of drunken driving. A judge placed her on 18 months of court supervision and ordered her to undergo alcohol abuse counseling.
Aurora police arrested Mercado again in December 2009 and again charged her with aggravated DUI,. A judge in April 2011 sentenced her to 12 days of periodic imprisonment.
in Kane County Jail and ordered her to pay a total of $3,565 in fines and court costs, records showed.
In addition to aggravated DUI and improper lane usage, court records indicated Naperville police charged Mercado with DUI, driving for the third time with a suspended or revoked license and driving without insurance. Her arraignment is set for Tuesday.
