Unlicensed driver who hit car, flipped truck in Naperville sentenced

An Elgin man who caused a massive traffic jam last month in Naperville after running a red light, hitting a car and then toppling the truck he was driving has been sentenced in that case.
Alejandro C. Avelino was placed on court supervision and fined a total of $430 for causing the Jan. 15 crash at Diehl Road and Raymond Drive on the city’s far northwest side.
Avelino, 48, pleaded guilty Feb. 6 in Naperville’s traffic court to charges of driving without a license and disobeying a traffic signal, according to court records. Judge Bruce R. Kelsey accepted Avelino’s pleas and imposed his sentence.
The crash occurred about 3:26 p.m. as Avelino was driving a black, Isuzu box truck, Naperville police said in January. Avelino at the time was driving north on Raymond Drive when he failed to stop for a red light.
Police said the truck smashed into a red Ford Mustang whose driver was traveling west through the intersection with a green light. The truck rolled onto its driver’s side, striking a red, four-door Saturn car as it did so, police said.
Avelino, the other motorists and their passengers all escaped injury.
The crash scene is northwest of the McDowell Forest Preserve and adjacent to the Tellabs campus. The crash brought area traffic to a standstill or crawl for more than an hour.
