Man hospitalized after Naperville house fire

A homeowner from Naperville’s far east side was hospitalized after a fire erupted in the basement of his house Monday.
Naperville Fire Department Capt. Brian Ross confirmed the man was taken by ambulance to Edward Hospital in Naperville, and was being treated there for unspecified injuries he sustained in the blaze.
The fire broke out about 5:15 p.m. Monday in the house at 1382 Green Trails Drive, in the city’s Huntington Hill neighborhood.
Ross said the man was working when “a small basement fire” erupted. The man contained the flames with an extinguisher, and firefighters had them completely out soon after their arrival, Ross said.
There was initial confusion as to whether the man was alone at the time of the blaze. Ross said the man told firefighters his children were elsewhere inside the house.
Firefighters searched the building but found no one else at home, Ross said. It was later learned that, unbeknownst to the man, the childen were with their mother at a different location, he said.
About 24 firefighters were sent to the scene in 10 emergency vehicles, Ross said. None of them was injured.
Firefighters ventilated the building after extinguishing the flames. Ross said an inspector from the city’s Transportation, Engineering and Development Business Group later deemed the house to be habitable.
Ross estimated damage to the home at $1,500. An investigation into the blaze is under way, he said.
Naperville police and members of the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District assisted firefighters at the scene.
