Julie Norkus is a multi-facetted artist who, in her own words “could always be doing something.” The idea for the Initial Date Canvas piece exclusively designed, hand-painted, crafted and custom-styled by Norkus originated on a popular idea, but then took on a life of its own.

“Initial tiles have been popular, and I wanted to do something like that for my house, but instead of using 12 individual tiles ... I wanted one piece,” remembers Norkus of the creative spark that later led to the Initial Date Canvas.

“I use ripped papers, metal products, plaster and water-based acrylics,” explains Norkus, adding that customers can request school logos and send in trinkets of sentimental value such as old keys to further personalize their customized heirloom.

“After our initial conversation, I make a rough sketch of the canvas, which I email the client. And then we work together to get it just right,” Norkus explains. “I’ve had customers send me photos of where they want to hang the canvas so I can work around the color scheme.”

Allow at least three to four weeks for artist’s turn-around. Prices per canvas vary, starting at $250, but in general do not exceed $400. Visit www.julienorkus.com or call 630-209-6734 for more information.

Standard size of the canvas is 30-by-40 inches, consisting of 12 squares, each a little artwork in itself. Custom sizes are available upon request. Room 363, a lifestyle boutique in downtown Naperville, owned by Mark Norkaitis, sells the canvas and also showcases some of Norkus’ other work.
