An ex-convict from far north suburban Park City has begun serving a three-year prison term for last summer’s theft of thousands of dollars worth of property and money from a house in Naperville, where he was working as a mover.
Nathaniel W. Goheen was transferred recently from Will County Jail in Joliet to the nearby Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, according to records on file with the Illinois Department of Corrections in Springfield. He turned 29 on Tuesday.
Goheen pleaded guilty Feb. 22 in Will County Circuit Court to a felony charge of theft or unauthorized control over property worth more than $500 but less than $10,000. Court records showed Judge Richard C. Schoenstedt that day accepted his plea, sentencing Goheen to prison and assessing fines and legal costs that totaled $550.
Naperville police the evening of Aug. 6 arrested Goheen on a preliminary charge of residential burglary. That followed a complaint from a woman who lives on the 3600 block of Landsdown Drive, in the Tall Grass neighborhood on the city’s far southwest side.
A police spokesman in August said officers were sent to the house to speak with the owner concerning a theft. The homeowner, 52, told them movers had been on the premises when she discovered $220 missing from her purse, and that a friend was missing $40 from hers.
Police “subsequently spoke with employees of the moving company and learned Goheen was responsible for the missing cash,” the spokesman said. Goheen had also taken an iPod, an iPhone, a wristwatch and several gift cards from the house, the spokesman said.
The spokesman did not reveal the name of the moving company or say whether the victim was in the process of moving to or from Naperville.
Gurnee police in early June arrested Goheen on a charge of attempted residential burglary, after he tried to break into a home in that village.
Prison records revealed Goheen was sentenced in 2007 to three years in prison, after being convicted of a felony charge of theft in Lake County.
