Updated: April 16, 2013 3:07PM

There will be a number of new principals next school year in Indian Prairie School District 204.

Janan Szurek will be the new principal for Georgetown Elementary School. Since 2005, Szurek has served as principal of Grand Prairie Elementary School in Plainfield School District 202.

Before becoming a principal, she served as an assistant principal and special education coordinator for the district. Szurek began her career in education in 1990 as a school social worker at the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative in Yorkville.

Szurek is taking over the post currently held by Georgetown Principal Kim Stephens, who will be leading Builta Elementary School in District 204 next year. She is replacing Builta Principal Randy Van Waning, who is retiring in June.

Stephens has been with District 204 since 1988. She has worked as a teacher and assistant principal at both the elementary and middle school levels, and has served as principal at three District 204 elementary schools.

Several other principals will move to new schools next year. Ken Bonomo, principal at Welch Elementary School, is moving to Cowlishaw Elementary School. Bonomo joined District 204 in 2010 after serving as principal of Pleasant Hill Elementary School in Winfield.

Joan Peterson, principal at Graham Elementary, is taking Bonomo’s position at Welch Elementary. Peterson worked as an assistant principal in District 204 before becoming principal of Graham Elementary in 2005.

Cowlishaw’s principal, Claudette Walton, is moving to the principal post at Graham Elementary. Walton has 22 years of experience in education, including serving as an assistant principal, principal and human resources director.
