For a unique gift, how about warm, soft socks? If you agree, then the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County has just what you need.
Warm, soft and environmentally friendly are just a few descriptive terms Johanna Biedron uses to describe the socks the district sells.
“I’ve got a pair myself,” the administrative assistant at the office of public affairs says.
The socks, designed about five years ago by a summer intern, feature native wildflowers like the widely spread Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea).
“They are bio-degradable, too,” adds Biedron of the socks made of 75 percent soy material.
They are great to wear around the house at this time of the year, she adds.
The women’s socks come in size medium only and are $6 each. Hiking socks for a more rustic “love message” come in men’s and women’s sizes.
The socks and a number of other fun products can be found on the website at www.dupageforest.com — find Goods from the Woods under the forest preserve news tab. Orders also can be placed over the phone at 630-933-7248 or stop in at the district headquarters at 3s580 Naperville Road, Wheaton.
“We have also been selling the socks at Anderson’s Bookshop. They are quite popular,” Biedron adds.
