Editor’s note: The Sun, with the help of the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club, is featuring each month a recent Naperville transplant or a resident who has had a significant life change. Let’s get to know our neighbors!
Kathy Moreno, 58, who is originally from Connecticut, moved to Illinois with her husband last her. She is co-chairing the second vice president position on the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club board and plans the club’s monthly luncheons.
What’s your story?
“We had been living in Shanghai, China, and Bangkok, Thailand, for the last seven years because of my husband’s job. It was an amazing life experience. Our two grown sons live in NYC and Jakarta, Indonesia.”
How did you find out about the Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club?
“As soon as we found out that we would be leaving Asia to relocate to my husband’s corporate office in Westchester, I Googled newcomers groups in the area. Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club was the first that I found. After living and surviving in two foreign countries, I knew the only way to survive another major move was to get involved with a social group right away.”
What do you like about the club?
“The ladies in this group were so welcoming! I jumped right in, going to events, activities and meetings. There is something to keep you busy almost every day of the week. … I have forged great friendships with so many women. I enjoy meeting all the new members, and it’s a treat for me that we have many international ladies. I get to practice my Mandarin with some of our Asian members.”
What is your favorite thing to do in Naperville?
“Naperville has so much to offer, and I couldn’t be happier. I love the parks, the bike paths, the restaurants and downtown. If Norman Rockwell had been from the Midwest, he would have painted Naperville!”
The Naperville Newcomers and Neighbors Club holds a welcome coffee once a month from September through June at the Municipal Center. Contact Sue at 630-904-5629 to learn more.
