When 100 of Illinois’ top teams face off Feb. 7 at the Illinois High School Association cheerleading competition, eight local squads will be among them.

Varsity cheerleaders from Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley, Naperville Central, Naperville North, Bolingbrook, Rosary, St. Charles East and South Elgin advanced to the state series at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington after impressive performances at sectionals.

For Metea Valley, who placed first in the coed division at sectionals, it was one for the Mustang books. “We are so proud of our team,” said Metea coach Lisa Braheny. “They are an amazing group of young men and women. … Their accomplishments will go down in school history as they are bringing home the first sectional championship ever at Metea.”

Neuqua Valley also earned a sectional first place in the large school division for the second consecutive year.

State champions will be crowned Saturday in four classes: small, medium, large and coed. The preliminary round begins Friday with the top 10 teams in each category advancing to the finals. It will be streamed live on www.IHSA.tv and on-demand after the event.
