Naperville Presbyterian Church presents a lecture on J.R.R. Tolkiens’ “The Hobbit” by Jerry Root, who holds a doctorate degree from British Open University. Read the full release below.

Naperville Presbyterian Church invites you to explore J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth with Dr. Jerry Root, from Wheaton College from 6-7:30 pm, Sunday, March 23 at Naperville Presbyterian Church.

For Tolkien, joy is the mark of true Fantasy: “The peculiar quality of the ‘joy’ in successful Fantasy can thus be explained as a sudden glimpse of the underlying reality or truth.” Fantasy for Tolkien then is not an escape from reality, but is a doorway to reality. From experiencing the joys that a true fantasy provides, someone may be stirred to the real world and the truths that such a story may picture. Tolkien’s world gives spiritual joy, insight and food for spiritually hungry modern people. Come and listen to Jerry unfold how Tolkien’s Hobbit gives us a vision of true life.

Jerry Root did his PhD at the British Open University on C.S. Lewis, edited The Quotable Lewis, and has authored 4 additional books.

Jerry has taught at Wheaton College and Biola University since 1991. Jerry’s lecture tours have fascinated audiences in over 31 countries on three continents, covering topics of wide interest.
