Camera phone repairman stole personal photos: police

A camera phone repairman working in downtown Naperville has been accused of stealing personal photographs of at least three of his clients.

Kyle A. Burg, 24, lives on the 800 block of Plainfield-Naperville Road, in the Hobson West area of central Naperville. He is free on bond and scheduled to appear Wednesday in DuPage County Circuit Court in Wheaton, to answer three misdemeanor counts of computer tampering/illegally obtaining data or services, according to court records.

Members of the Naperville Police Department’s High Tech Crimes Unit began investigating Burg late last summer, Sgt. Bill Davis said.

Police first learned of the alleged phone tampering on Sept. 2, Davis said. That was when a man reported having taken his iPhone in for repair in August to a business on the 100 block of South Webster Street, where Burg was working as a phone repairman, Davis said via email.

The man told police “when he later got the phone back, he discovered that several personal photographs stored on his phone were sent to an unknown telephone number,” Davis said. A forensics investigation eventually concluded Burg, in his capacity as a repairman, “had viewed and sent the photos from the victim’s iPhone to his (Burg’s) personal phone,” Davis said.

“Further investigation revealed that two other victims … had personal photos taken from phones” they had brought in for repair, and which “were sent to Burg’s phone,” Davis said. “All of this being done without consent of the owners of the phones.”

Authorities on Dec. 16 formally charged Burg with computer tampering, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Burg surrendered Jan. 31 police records showed.

Davis would not comment on the content of the allegedly stolen photos, other than to say they were “personal” in nature. He added the written police incident report “indicates that Burg is no longer employed by the business” that repaired the phones, a business Davis would not identify.

Court records revealed Burg has received numerous traffic tickets, but has no criminal record in DuPage, Kane and Will counties.
