Last week was a memorable one for Santa Clara freshman basketball player Jared Brownridge (Waubonsie Valley).
Not only was he named the West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year on March 3, Brownridge had an opportunity to meet Steve Nash, an NBA player and former Santa Clara great on Friday.
“It was thrilling not only meeting Steve, but also winning that honor,” said Brownridge. “I have looked up to Steve for a long time. He worked himself into the situation. To be named the Newcomer of the Year motivates me greatly. My coaches gave me the opportunity and my teammates have helped me get this honor. To everyone that voted for me, I want to thank them. It shows me that I worked hard and I am on the right track.”
Brownridge has rewritten the Santa Clara freshman record books this year. Brownridge has the freshman records for points scored (543), points per game (17.0), field goals made (175), three pointers made (91), three point percentage (43.1) and free throw percentage (85.7). He also holds the freshman single-game records for points scored (38), field goals made (12) and three-pointers made (seven).
Last Thursday, Santa Clara (14-18, 6-12) defeated Pacific 81-64 in the first round of the WCC Tournament. Brownridge scored 20 points by nailing 7-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. The WCC all-conference player also had three rebounds in his 37 minutes of play.
Zachary McClernon (Metea Valley) helped the Illinois-Chicago men’s swimming team take third (520 points) in the Horizon League Championships. McClernon finished 13th in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.78). He also competed in the 200-yard backstroke (17th, 1:53.85) and 100-yard butterfly (20th, :51.39).
Eureka (5-20, 4-14 SLIAC) got four points and three rebounds from Brandon Gossett (West Aurora) in one of their final games of the year, an 83-56 loss to Webster.
