Neuqua Valley claims Upstate Eight indoor title

The departure of four-time defending Class 3A track and field state champion Lake Park to the DuPage Valley Conference left a huge power vacuum Friday night in the Upstate Eight boys indoor championship.

Neuqua Valley and sister school Waubonsie Valley were irascible siblings for much of the competition in Batavia. But the 400-meter run proved to be an event-changer.

Neuqua Valley senior Zac Espinosa made a mad dash down the outside to cruise past St. Charles North senior Jack Feeney and teammate Nick Rafacz. Even more importantly, the 16 points they earned enabled the Wildcats to pass Waubonsie for good.
