Henricksen: The Winners—and loser—from state finals weekend in Peoria

The Chicago Public League brought home the biggest hardware from Peoria this past weekend, with Whitney Young and Morgan Park claiming 4A and 3A state titles, respectively. But there were other winners –– and one big loser.

Biggest Winners

Benet Academy

For as successful as the Benet program has been since coach Gene Heidkamp took over in 2008, it just felt like the Redwings needed this trip to Peoria.

There was the crushing, end-of-regulation buzzer-beating, overtime super-sectional defeat to Simeon, the ultimate state champs, in 2010. Then there was the 29-0 team ranked No. 1 in the state, which was stunned by East Aurora in the sectional semis in 2011. There was the sectional final loss to West Aurora last year.
