Heartland Blood Centers encourages all healthy community members, 16 years old or older, to donate blood during Donate Life Month in April.
National Donate Life Month was established in 2003 to raise public awareness of the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation, and to celebrate those who have saved lives through the gift of donation.
About 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion each year, according to America’s Blood Centers.
“One of the easiest ways to celebrate National Donate Life Month is to give blood,” said Dennis Mestrich, president and CEO of Heartland Blood Centers. “When you donate blood, others will live.”
For a list of donation locations, visit www.heartlandbc.org for a Heartland center or community blood drive near you.
Blood donors receive free mini-medical exams on site, including information about their temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and hemoglobin level.
Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with written parental permission; weigh at least 110 pounds; be symptom free of cold, flu and allergies; and be in general good health. Donors who have traveled outside the United States within the past 12 months should contact Heartland at 1-800-7TO-GIVE to determine eligibility.
Also come out for one of the following blood drives. Sign up for a specific time to donate at www.heartlandbc.org. Walk-ins usually are welcome.
