Foodies’ paradise: Naperville CARES hosts annual Cuisine for a Cause

Some of the tastiest tidbits in town will on tables for the taking when Naperville CARES hosts its 11th annual Cuisine for a Cause on April 26, at a new venue.

The atrium of Navistar’s world headquarters just off Warrenville Road will provide the setting for the agency’s major spring fundraiser, which for the past several years has taken place at Tellabs’ campus on Diehl Road.

One of the largest events that contribute to Naperville CARES’ yearly expenses, the culinary showcase offers sample portions of specialties served by dozens of local restaurants and beverage purveyors, and an open bar.

“We’ve come a long way from that first pasta dinner at St. Raphael’s Church,” said Janet Derrick, the agency’s executive director.

Restaurants that participated in the past will return for this year’s event, and an array of appealing goods will be offered in live and silent auctions.

“We’ve really had great outreach from the community,” Derrick said, adding that sponsorships are up for this year’s event as well. “We’re thankful for that.”

Lead sponsors for the evening include My Chef Catering, Invesco and the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Charitable Foundation. Additional support is coming from Navistar; the Lymangood Group at Morgan Stanley; First Community Bank; Energy Services Air Conditioning, Heating & Electrical; BMO Harris Bank; Naperville magazine; The Naperville Sun; and Chuck and Diane Nicholas.

Naperville CARES, which later this year will mark 15 years of helping local families in acute economic straits, is probably receiving slightly more clients than it did last year, Derrick said. They’re also coming with slightly different concerns that suggest the longer-term effects of economic hardship.

“We just are encountering more complicated and more life-changing events in people’s families,” such as divorces, seniors who are having trouble paying their bills and people who have been confronted by illness and have no more sick days to take off from work, Derrick said.

“We get calls from everywhere, from all over the community, including business leaders in the community who hear about people and they refer them to us.”

Cuisine for a Cause is set for 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Navistar, 2791 Navistar Drive, Lisle. Tickets cost $100 and can be purchased at or by calling 630-369-0200.
