In recognition of April as Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Human Services program at College of DuPage will sponsor the 11th annual Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Awareness Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, in the Student Services Center, Room 2206, on the College’s main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.
This event is free and open to the public. Hosted by the Human Services 1180 Domestic/Family Violence class, the fair is designed to educate and raise awareness in District 502 and beyond of the crimes of child abuse and sexual abuse.
“Because abuse often happens behind closed doors, it is important to understand just how many people are affected and the ramifications of this abuse,” said Human Services instructor Andrea Polites. “This event provides a broad range of information to create awareness of this issue, as well as provides a doorway to services available to those who have been affected by these crimes.”
A number of local and regional organizations, including the Clothesline Project, Elmhurst Hospital SANE program, Family Shelter Service, Mutual Ground and the YWCA, will have information booths and representatives at the fair. Representatives also will be available from the College of DuPage Counseling and Advising office and the Human Services Network club, as well as students from various classes including child abuse, crisis intervention and sociology. In addition, various fundraisers will take place, including a student-run bake sale with the proceeds going to the YWCA Rape Crisis Center.
