Baseball: Naperville Central’s Bobby McMillen tenacious at the plate

Naperville Central outfielder Bobby McMillen is hitting .484 this season after a stellar year at linebacker for the 8A champion Redhawks.

Naperville Central’s Bobby McMillen was a heck of a hitter last fall.

The junior linebacker was second on the football team with 71 first hits, led with 47 assists and helped the Redhawks win the Class 8A state title.

Girls Track and Field: Cary-Grove’s Morgan Schulz shines; Naperville North finishes second at its own invite

Morgan Schulz of Cary-Grove, named the meet MVP, won the A-level 100 hurdles and the 800, anchored a third-place 800 relay and then came back to win the 300. Cary-Grove won the event with 349 points. Naperville North was second with 313.

Morgan Schulz made sure she had more than enough left in reserve.

Schulz, a three-event winner for team champion Cary-Grove, capped off a grueling night on the track by blowing away the field in the 300-meter hurdles at Thursday’s Gus Scott Invitational at Naperville North.

Softball: Maddie Vassar’s solo shot lifts Naperville North over Neuqua Valley

Naperville North freshman Maddie Vassar’s sixth-inning solo blast provided the difference in the Huskies’ 7-6 win over Neuqua Valley on Thursday.

Naperville North’s Alexis Solak hit a grand slam and Neuqua Valley’s Colleen Hill crushed a three-run homer, but in the end it was a freshman who stole the show.

Neuqua Valley’s bats saved the day for the Wildcats. Neuqua pounded out 16 hits en route to a 10-9 won over St. Charles East on Thursday.

Baseball: Waubonsie Valley gives Geneva first loss of season

Ryan Jones’ RBI single with the bases loaded plated Ben Vietri with the winning run for Waubonsie Valley in a 6-5 Upstate Eight thriller Thursday against Geneva.

Waubonsie Valley was finally able to hand Geneva its first loss of the season Thursday, but the Vikings sure didn’t go out without a fight.

Waubonsie led by three going into the seventh inning, only to see Geneva tie the game 5-5. But the Warriors responded in the bottom of the seventh, as Ryan Jones’ RBI single with the bases loaded plated Ben Vietri with the winning run in a 6-5 Upstate Eight thriller.

Girls Soccer: Zickert sisters connect in double OT, help Buffalo Grove edge Metea Valley

Colleen Zickert received a pass from her sister Kelli and lofted a 20-yard shot just inside the far post 90 seconds into the second overtime to lift No. 1 Buffalo Grove to a 2-1 victory over Metea Valley in a PepsiCo Showdown quarterfinal in Aurora.

Buffalo Grove is getting everybody’s best shot this season, which isn’t surprising after the Bison made a run to the state semifinals in 2013.

They received their biggest test yet on Thursday but managed to stay unbeaten by squeaking past host Metea Valley 2-1 in double overtime in a PepsiCo Showdown quarterfinal in Aurora.
