Pets of The Week: Dogs and cats available from area shelters

Fred

Age: 1 year old

Breed: Domestic short hair

Background: Fred came to HELP with his sister Wilma. They are living in a foster home with dogs, cats and kids, and have done great.

Personality: Fred like his sister starts purring as soon as you touch him! Fred loves to cuddle and will do whatever it takes to wrap himself around his foster moms neck in bed to cuddle. Like most kittens, Fred is very active and loves to play. He can be shy when new people come around so he would do best being adopted with his sister Wilma.

Adoption fee: $100

Peter

Age: 3 years old

Breed: Domestic short hair

Background: Peter came from Feral Fixers in October.

Personality: Peter is FIV positive so he would need to live as either an only cat or with another cat who is FIV positive. He is a laid-back gent with a personality of his own. He is very mild mannered — except when it involves food — he loves to eat!

Adoption fee: $100

Other: All animals at ADOPT are vet checked, spayed or neutered, microchipped and are up to date on age-related vaccines.

Where to find this pet: ADOPT Pet Shelter, 420 Industrial Drive, Naperville, 630-355-2299 or www.adoptpetshelter.org.

Jess

Age: 1 year old

Breed: Husky, lab mix

Background: Jess came to ADOPT in December from a high-kill shelter in Kentucky. He was adopted out for a few weeks and returned. (No fault of the dogs.)

Personality: Jess is a gorgeous husky lab mix. He is a smart boy who is eager to learn. He loves to run in the fenced play yard and go for walks. He is quick to learn new behaviors and would do well in an obedience class. He would do best with an active family that would include Jess in their outings

Adoption fee: $250

Bruce

Age: 1-1/2 years old

Breed: Shih tzu/poodle mix

Background: Bruce was transferred to NAHS from another shelter.

Personality: Bruce is a happy-go-lucky and affectionate guy who never says no to attention. It’s very important that his new owners are dedicated to getting him groomed regularly to ensure he stays a happy and healthy dog. His new adopters will need to be experienced dog owners, and kids in his new home need to be older since he is still learning to share his possessions. Bruce get along with some dogs, and might be able to live with cats as well.

Adoption fee: $200

Other: All animals at NAHS have been examined for health and temperament, are up-to-date on vaccines and have been microchipped. They are spayed and neutered at adoption.

Where to find this pet: Naperville Area Humane Society, 1620 W. Diehl Road, Naperville, or www.napervilleareahumanesociety.org.

Gypsy

Age: 5-1/2 years old

Breed: Domestic short hair

Background: Gypsy was surrendered to NAHS because her owners did not have enough time.

Personality: Gypsy can be a bit shy at first, but once she warms up, she is very affectionate and playful. Gypsy might be OK living with another friendly, mellow cat and a calm, gentle dog might be fine as well. Children in her new home should be at least 5 years or older.

Adoption fee: $25

Other: All animals at NAHS have been examined for health and temperament, are up-to-date on vaccines and have been microchipped. They are spayed and neutered at adoption.

Bridget

Age: 3 years old

Breed: Short-haired tabby

Background: Bridget was born to an outdoor mom on St. Patrick’s Day 2011, and rescued with her siblings at 5 weeks old. She has been in foster care since.

Personality: Bridget is a small, sweet kitty with a big voice, so she may be part Siamese. She is very petite and only weighs about 6pounds. She likes cuddling with her foster mom, but can hold her own with the three big male cats she lives with.

Adoption fee: $100

Other: Spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines
