Naperville man dies in traffic crash

An elderly man from Naperville’s northwest side might have been involved in a medical emergency Wednesday afternoon, when the sport utility vehicle he was driving left the roadway and crashed into a streetlight pole along Interstate 55 near Bolingbrook, killing him.

Illinois State Police Trooper Aldo Schumann early Wednesday evening identified the man as Vernon H. Joy Jr., 71. He lived on Inverrary Drive, in Naperville’s Cress Creek Commons neighborhood.

Schumann said a preliminary police investigation showed the crash occurred about 2:28 p.m., while Joy was driving a 2013 GMC Acadia south on I-55 near its intersection with Interstate 355.

Joy apparently lost control of the SUV, veering off the roadway and into a ditch, Schumann said. The vehicle then struck a light pole near the Joliet Road ramp, he said.

Schumann said Joy was traveling alone at the time and was wearing his seat belt.

Joy was taken to a nearby hospital Schumann declined to identify. Schumann said hospital medical staff members told police “they believe there may have been some kind of medical condition” in Joy’s background that might have figured in the crash.

The southbound I-55 exit ramp onto Joliet Road was closed to traffic during the emergency, Schumann said.
