Naperville police on Tuesday continued their investigation into a thwarted scam, in which a man and a woman posing as telephone company workers tried to gain access to a local bank’s computer system.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that helps police identify and arrest the duo. The incident occurred May 28 at a bank police are declining to identify “at this time,” Sgt. Bill Davis said late Tuesday afternoon via email.
Police were called after the man and the woman “entered the bank, and identified themselves as employees of a telephone carrier/company,” Davis wrote in a release. The pair “stated that they had an appointment to ‘convert’ the telephone lines from the old system to the new system, and then attempted to gain access to the room containing the telephone lines and computer equipment to perform the work.”
Bank employees soon “verified that the subjects were not with the stated company, and were denied entry,” Davis said. They then left the bank.
“The subjects were not carrying any paperwork, tools or equipment,” nor were they seen leaving the area in a vehicle, Davis said.
One suspect was described as being a white man between the ages of 25 and 35, standing 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and having an average build. He was clean-shaven, had dark, wavy or curly hair and was “well-dressed, in a dark suit coat, dark dress slacks, white dress shirt and dark tie,” according to the release.
His partner was described as being a black woman in her 30s, standing 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a medium to average build, a medium complexion and “relaxed/permed dark hair.” She, too, was “well-dressed, in a business-type suit, blouse (and) low heels, and carrying a Coach purse.”
Davis encouraged those who have or want information about the incident to call police, at 630-420-6666. He added local business owners “are reminded to verify the legitimacy of anyone attempting to gain access to protected areas of their business.”
Witnesses to the attempted scam or similar incidents, or those who believe they have information about the man or woman, were asked to call police or Naperville Crime Stoppers, at 630-420-6006. Callers can remain anonymous.Tags: Police Blotter
