The Women’s Board of Lyric Opera of Chicago celebrated the company’s production of “The Sound of Music” with an evening of Austrian elegance on May 2. More than 160 guests, many wearing dirndls and lederhosen, enjoyed the festivities and the performance. The event raised nearly $200,000 to benefit Lyric Opera.

Traditional Austrian music was performed by The Johnny Wagner Band, including yodeling, an alphorn and a rendition of “Edelweiss” using more than 20 Austrian cowbells.

Following the cocktail reception, guests enjoyed a themed dinner in the William B. and Catherine Graham Room.

Alison W. McNally of Winnetka and Eileen Murphy of Chicago were co-chairs of the event. In keeping with the spirit of the evening, dressmakers Mimi Papavasiliou and Kelly Abrams used fabric from the curtains which previously adorned the William B. and Catherine Graham Room to created emerald-green dresses for the women and their daughters to wear at the gala.
