Investigators on Monday continued to seek the source and cause of a fire that did significant damage to a luxury home near Naperville’s far east side. No one was home at the time and no one was injured in the blaze, which erupted about 12:30 p.m. Sunday in the house at 23W786 Hobson Road.

The house is in an unincorporated area of DuPage County, set back from the north side of Hobson Road and a short distance east of the Eggerman Woods Forest Preserve.

Lisle-Woodridge Fire District Bureau Chief Jim French on Monday said “several fire investigators are working right now” to pinpoint the cause and source of the blaze.

Flames were largely confined to the basement, although there was smoke damage throughout the house, he said.

More than 30 firefighters were ultimately sent to the scene of the blaze, after a passerby called 911 to report seeing smoke wafting from the home, French wrote in a release. Four fire engines, two ladder trucks, two medic units and a command team were initially sent to the area, French said.

After assessing the situation, command personnel summoned four more engines, two more ladder trucks, another medic unit and additional staff to the scene, he said.

The first firefighters to arrive “stretched multiple hose lines and began extinguishment of the fire,” French said. “The other companies strategically placed ladders around the building, assisted with hose lines” and searched the house, he said.

Firefighters soon learned the owners of the home were out of town at the time, and that no one else was inside, French said. He added the bulk of the fire “was under control early into the incident.”

Some firefighters remained on the scene until about 4 p.m., performing cleanup and salvage operations.

Building inspectors determined the house was unfit for occupancy.

Lisle-Woodridge Fire District firefighters were assisted in battling the blaze by firefighters from the Naperville and Downers Grove fire departments and the Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District.

French said investigators as of Monday had not determined a financial damage estimate for the fire.
