Foundation raises $3,000 for park scholarships

Members of the Naperville park board received a check for $3,000 Thursday night on behalf of the Naperville Park Foundation. The money was raised last winter during the Winter Ale Fest, a first-time event.

“We are hoping to continue making contributions to the Park District and are looking at other events,” said Andrew Schaffner, foundation vice president. “This has been very rewarding, and we’re hoping to help more residents enjoy the Park District programs.”

Executive Director Ray McGury said the money would be earmarked for the district’s scholarship fund, which has increased its funding considerably during the past five years.

“There was a time when we funded this with amounts between $5,000 and $10,000, and this year we are well over $20,000,” McGury told the board. “We still have people who are hurting in this economy who can’t afford some of our programs, and we appreciate the opportunity to help more of them.”

New lights were approved for the Naperbrook Golf Course parking lot to replace the lights that have been there about 20 years. Ross Electric plans to complete installation work by Aug. 1. Cost for replacement is $28,500.

Commissioners also elected new board positions for the next term. Effective immediately Mike Reilly will serve as the new president, Ron Ory as vice president, Jacki Stern as secretary and Sue Stanish as treasurer.
