Pets of the Week: Dogs and cats available for adoption

Merlot

Age: 3 to 4 years old

Breed: Brown tabby

Background: Merlot was rescued in the midst of this past sub-zero winter with a group of kitties that had been discovered living near an abandoned apartment complex. She and the others had been spotted hiding in and under a row of dumpsters, which was also their food source. Due to a caring bus driver, these guys were brought to safety.

Personality: Merlot likes to be upside down — a lot. She is a nice combo of playful and laid back and loves to sleep in soft pet beds. She uses the litter box like a champ and is a very dainty and neat cat. She tolerates other animals OK as long as they don’t get in her face. People are definitely her first choice as a buddy.

Other: Merlot is up to date on her vaccines, microchipped and has been spayed.

Adoption fee: $100

Howie

Age: 1-1/2 years old

Breed: Hound mix

Background: He came from Kentucky in September.

Personality: Howie weighs a healthy 53.6 pounds. Howie enjoys his daily walks and is still learning how to walk nice on a leash. He is very active and energetic and requires obedience training, a fenced in yard and plenty of exercise. Howie needs a person that will take charge. He would do best in a home that will be dedicated to his training and exercise.

Adoption fee: $250

Brutus

Age: 5 years old

Breed: Shepherd-boxer mix

Background: He was transferred to NAHS from an overcrowded shelter in Oklahoma.

Personality: Brutus is a playful guy who loves toys and playing fetch. After a long day of playing outside, he really enjoys snuggling up next to you. Brutus gets along with most other dogs, but no cats please. It would be best if children in his new home have had experience with dogs.

Adoption fee: $200

Other: All animals at NAHS have been examined for health and temperament, are up-to-date on vaccines and have been microchipped. They are spayed and neutered at adoption.

Where to find this pet: Naperville Area Humane Society, 1620 W. Diehl Road in Naperville, or www.napervilleareahumanesociety.org.

Joshua

Age: 2 years old

Breed: Labrador retriever mix

Background: A joy to be around, this big, happy boy loves people of all ages and gets along great with other dogs. Getting belly rubs are one of Joshua’s favorite pastimes! He eagerly seeks attention and sometimes forgets he’s not a lap dog. He enjoys his crate. Joshua really enjoys car rides and going with you on walks, although he pulls on the leash. He’s very smart and already knows “sit” and “lie down,” but would do best with continued training.

Other: Joshua is neutered, housebroken, crate-trained and up-to-date with his vaccinations, microchipping is included with his adoption fee.

Adoption fee: $200

Jozzlyn

Age: 7 years old

Breed: Domestic short hair

Background: She was found as a stray in Naperville by local animal control and transferred to NAHS.

Personality: Jozzlyn is a sweet and playful girl, but she will need a family who’s experienced with cats. She is the type of cat who’ll let you know when she has had enough attention. Jozzlyn is able to live with other gentle cats, but no dogs.

Adoption fee: $25

Other: All animals at NAHS have been examined for health and temperament, are up-to-date on vaccines and have been microchipped. They are spayed and neutered at adoption.

Cataleya

Age: 1-1/2 years old

Breed: Tabby

Background: She came to HELP pregnant and delivered seven healthy kittens (all have been adopted). She not only took great care of her babies, but she pitched to help in with another group of kittens when their mom took longer to recover.

Personality: Cataleya is a very curious young adult brown tabby. She likes to play with the rest of the cats and kittens in her foster home. When she is finished eating, she makes sure to cover up her food with whatever is handy — toys, strings of yarn, paper towels.

Other: She is completely litter boxed trained, up to date on vaccines, microchipped and spayed.

Adoption fee: $100

Holden

Age: 5 years old

Background: Holden came to us as an owner give-up.

Personality: Holden is a special needs cat who is a gorgeous all-white male with an outgoing personality. He loves to talk and play — his favorite toy is the “cat dancer.” He is affectionate and will tell you just how much. Holden should be an only cat.
