Smooth Jazz Fest this weekend

Festivals get classy this weekend, with a smooth jazz fest in Wheaton.

So ship the shorties off to Grandma’s house — it’s time for the grownups to play.

Memorial Park in Wheaton will be alive with the sweet sounds of gentle jazz at the second annual Smooth Jazz Festival.

The event runs from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday and is presented by the Wheaton Park District along with WPJC-FM and is hosted by Rick O’Dell. The event will feature jazz artists, wine, beer and local food vendors.

Headlining the evening’s entertainment is acclaimed saxophonist Donald Hayes, who has played or recorded with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Jessie J, Robin Thicke, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

Naperville native and keyboardist Scott Allman takes the stage at 6:15 p.m. for a show featuring saxophonist Darren Rahm. Allman’s music has been compared to contemporary jazz greats such as the Rippingtons, Bob James, Ramsey Lewis and Brian Culbertson.

Roland Gresham of Nashville kicks off the fest at 4:15 p.m. Smooth Jazz recording artist Roland Gresham is a native of Tennessee.
