GLENVIEW — Hoopeston pro Michael Davan fired a 6-under par 66 in Monday’s opening round of the 65th Illinois Open to take a one-shot lead at The Glen Club.
Barrington amateur Alex Burge is alone in second, one stroke back at 67. Four players are tied at 4-under 68 and a trio, including Aurorans Thomas O’Bryan and Bryce Emory are tied for seventh at 69.
Defending champion Joe Kinney of Antioch is tied for 16th at 1-under 71.
The field of 156 golfers includes a record 81 amateurs and will be cut to the top 50 and ties after Tuesday’s second round. The 54-hole event concludes on Wednesday at The Glen Club.
Algonquin amateur Mike Brierley leads Elgin area players, tied for 16th at 1-under 71.
Other area players include amateur Eric Winters (73) of Elgin, Drew Chuipek (73) of Algonquin, Dan Scardina (74) of Bartlett, amateur Mark Esposito (75) of Elgin, Michael Sainz (75) of Elgin, Donald Langland Jr. (77) of Algonquin, amateur Jordan Wetsch (85) of St. Charles, amateur Michael Mattas (87) of Streamwood and amateur Alex Hansberger (88) of St. Charles.
University of Iowa sophomore Raymond Knoll, coming off his win in last week’s Illinois Amateur, leads Naperville area golfers with a 2-over par 74 that leaves him tied for 43rd.
