Police Blotter: 69-year-old ‘took one for the team’

These are incidents reported by the Naperville Police Department. Where charges have been filed, the report includes when and where the suspect was stopped or taken into custody and the nature of the charges.

Saturday, July 19

Vehicular burglary: A 53-year-old woman reported between 8 p.m. July 17 and 5 a.m. today, unlocked vehicle entered while parked in driveway of home on 300 block of Cottonwood Lane; vehicle’s contents rummaged through, but nothing stolen.

Sunday, July 20

Property damage: A 64-year-old woman reported between 2 and 8 a.m., mailbox knocked off mounting post and onto pavement outside home on 1900 block of Nutmeg Lane; woman told police “she heard kids yelling in front of her residence” early that morning.

Aggravated battery: Israel Alcantar-Abrego, 24, Aurora; 12:01 a.m. at Potter’s Place, 29 W. Jefferson Ave.; charged with aggravated battery of a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and battery.

Trespassing: About 12:58 a.m., unspecified number of juveniles found on campus of Patterson Elementary School, 3731 Lawrence Drive; all charged with trespassing and violating curfew.

DUI: Gordan A. Acevedo, 22, Bolingbrook; 1:45 a.m. near Springdale Circle and Long Acre Drive; charged with two counts DUI and one count each driving without rear license plate light and speeding.

Battery: Nicholas M. LeBeau, 22, Downers Grove; Timothy J. O’Riley, 24, Woodridge; and Nathan T.D. Stapleton, 21, Winfield; 1:59 a.m. near Jefferson Avenue and Washington Street; all three charged with battery causing bodily harm.

Unlicensed driver: Geova Arias, 38, Aurora; 2:13 a.m. near Jefferson Avenue and Route 59; charged with driving without a license and two counts driving without insurance.

DUI: Mitchell F. Anderson, 21, Romeoville; 2:20 a.m. near Bailey Road and Washington Street; charged with two counts DUI and one count each possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.

Property damage: Aobo Ma, 21, 6S400 block of Millcreek Court; charged at 3:16 a.m. with criminal damage to property, for damaging screen door of home on 500 block of Braemar Avenue.

Property damage: Sometime before 6:03 a.m., street sign and post knocked down, falling into yard of home near Cobblebrook Lane and Strawbridge Court.

Shoplifting: About 12:56 p.m., unidentified male or female received city of Naperville citation for retail theft, following incident at unidentified business on 3100 block of 111th Street.

Shoplifting: Rosa M. Chavez, 62, Aurora; 8:09 p.m. at Walmart SuperCenter, 2552 W. 75th St.; charged with retail theft.

Vehicular damage: A 23-year-old woman reported between 8:25 and 8:48 p.m., all four tires punctured on vehicle parked on 800 block of Greenwood Circle.

Monday, July 21

Vehicle vs. bicyclist: About 8:45 a.m., female bicyclist was riding west on sidewalk near Gartner Road and Holly Court; unidentified, male motorist “stopped at the sign on Holly Court and then, when he proceeded, cyclist appeared in front of him, (but) a large shrub concealed the approach of the cyclist, (who) did not stop before she entered into the intersection;” report did not indicate whether cyclist was injured; motorist charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident/driving too fast for conditions.

Vehicle vs. pedestrian: Between 9 and 9:44 a.m., unidentified motorist struck woman in parking lot on north side of Garden Fresh Market, 955 W. 75th St.; woman “was walking south toward the store, (and) stated that she was struck from behind, and never saw the vehicle as it came toward her;” report did not indicate whether woman was hurt in crash, which occurred on private property.

Improper lane use: About 12:33 p.m., unidentified motorist’s vehicle left roadway and struck streetlight pole near Ogden Avenue and Royal St. George Drive; pole was toppled and fell onto second vehicle; no injuries reported; at-fault driver charged with improper lane usage.

Traffic crash: A 69-year-old man reported about 1:44 p.m., he “lost his brakes (and) swerved off road” near Ogden Avenue and Washington Street; man told police he “did not want to hit (nearby) vehicles, so he took one for the team and picked out a tree,” into which his vehicle crashed; driver apparently not injured.

Shoplifting: Taylor N. Deethardt, 20, and Adriana M. Diaz-DeLeon, 18, hometowns not provided; 11:50 p.m. at Walmart SuperCenter, 2552 W. 75th St.; charged with retail theft.
