Michaelene Majestic’s love for animals started as a young girl.
“I wanted to own a pet store when I was 5,” Majestic says.
As a teen and young adult, she worked at a veterinarian’s office, thinking she could better serve animals as a vet. When observing surgeries became more than she could stomach, Majestic chose to help the animals most in need.
Majestic started Just Giants Rescue Inc. in Oswego in May. As you would imagine, Just Giants specializes in large breeds like Great Danes and St. Bernards. Many of their rescues come from owner surrenders and by networking with other rescues.
“There is a large demand for big dogs, but they are not for everyone,” Majestic says.
Adoptable dogs can be found on the Just Giants’ website, Petfinder, Adopt a Pet or at adoption events around the Chicagoland area. All dogs are vet checked, spayed or neutered and have been tested for behavior before they are placed for adoption.
Just Giants is foster based, meaning their dogs stay with foster families until a home can be found.
“We take them in and treat them like our own pets,” says Majestic, who is fostering a Great Dane and a Great Pyrenees. Families interested in becoming a foster family can apply on their website.
Animal lovers who can’t provide a foster home can help in other ways, such as attending adoption events or selling merchandise.
“We are also looking for business-minded volunteers,” Majestic says.

Tween shop in Batavia
Shop with Michelle opened in January at 241 W. Wilson Ave. in Batavia, right across from the library. The store, which shares the space with Hummingbird in a Box, carries fashions for tweens, teens and women.
“We have a lot of fun impulse items, too,” owner Michelle Cianferri says.
Seeing a need for a boutique that catered to the tween crowd, Cianferri places her focus on fun, age-appropriate fashions for girls.
“I always ask myself, ‘Would I let my daughter wear that?’ before I purchase it for the store,” says Cianferri, mother of two tweens.
Shop with Michelle carries lines from several designers, including Hudson Threads, Purple Pixies and Zinnias. Recently, Shop with Michelle became the first store in the Chicagoland area to carry the Arthur George sock line by Robert Kardashian. The socks offer fun sayings and bright colors.
Other items found in Shop with Michelle include books, puzzles, frames, purses and back-to-school items like locker accessories. Coupons and summer sale information can be found on their website.
Customer service is important to Cianferri, who offers delivery and personal shopping.
“I do whatever it takes to make them happy,” Cianferri says.
