On a very warm, sunny Saturday afternoon a large group of 10 and under nervous and anxious tennis players gathered at the tennis courts at Waubonsie Valley High School for the 2nd Annual NSJTL Boys & Girls 10 & under Singles Tournament.
Throughout the afternoon they were cheered on by their parents and their brothers and sisters, not only for their exceptional match play on the courts, but also for their positive attitude toward their opponents.
For all but three of the players, this was their first time to experience the fun, but spometimes the terror, of tennis competition.
Ritika Patel took first place in the Girls Division, her very first venture into competitive; second place went to Sofia Olaru. Caroline Wiertelak was awarded the Girls Sportsmanship Award for her outstanding attitude and fair play through all of the tournament.
Kota Jameson was all smiles after weathering 4 rounds of match play and took home 1st place; Aiden Lam took 2nd place. Tyler Yu and Derek Sisbarro fought through some of the longest points of the tournament, with Tyler pulling off 3rd place.
Dylan Troy was selected as the winner of the Boys Sportsmanship Award. Despite losing his first match, he pulled off a strong 7-6 (4) first round Consolation match, only to lose in the semis of the draw. His last point on the court was a rally that went on for 23 hits over the net. Despite his loss, Dylan was still smiling as he congratulated his opponent.
