The pleasant, peaceful view of swans swimming on a large pond is a deceiving way for the nine-hole Streamwood Oaks Golf Course to end.
That’s because the ninth hole at the Village of Streamwood course, which is located just east of the intersection of Routes 19 and 59, is fraught with danger for golfers from the low handicap to the average hacker.
The par-4 hole plays at a distance of 402 yards from the tips, and also from 381, 363 and 314.
“There’s water all the way up on the right if they slice it and then, because the hazard is sort of an inverted-J shape, it runs right up next to the green and you can hit it again,” said manager John Costello.
The long hitter could be in danger from a creek running through the fairway 298 yards away from the middle of the tee, and trees, out of bounds and the back yards of a townhome complex loom on the left side of the hole.
“The out of bounds doesn’t seem to come into play as much as on our sixth hole, but can if they really hook it,” Costello said.
Stalking the green to the right is the bottom of that “inverted-J” shaped water hazard, but a deep sand trap guards the front middle to middle-right side of the green, making the approach difficult.
“Depending on where the flag is, you’re usually hitting it right over that bunker, so it’s a straight shot right into the bunker with no trouble,” Costello said. “And I know because I’ve been in there plenty of times.
“And the green isn’t a picnic either because it’s certainly not level.”
It’s raised and tiered, with the front left sloping down toward the front and the back end elevated and contoured with sharp breaks.
If all that isn’t enough, it’s usually played into the wind with a prevailing westerly or southwesterly wind, and the 402 or 381 yards can seem much longer.
The nine-hole course was opened in September 1990 and plays to 3,435 yards from the back, 3,228 from the blue and 3,065 from the whites. The front tees are 2,597.
Although the Village of Streamwood owns the course, it is operated by Links Management.Tags: golf
