A 20-year-old man from Naperville is serving a sentence in DuPage County Jail, after being convicted of stealing $80 nearly two years ago from a business on the city’s southeast side.

John R. Staggs lives on the 1000 block of Alder Lane, in the West Highlands neighborhood. He entered the jail on Monday to begin serving a sentence of 90 days of periodic imprisonment.

Staggs pleaded guilty to a felony charge of burglary, according to records on file in DuPage County Circuit Court. A second count of burglary was dismissed in exchange for that plea.

Judge Robert G. Kleeman accepted the plea and imposed the jail sentence. Records indicated Kleeman also placed Staggs on two years of probation and ordered him to undergo counseling and substance abuse testing.

The judge also ordered Staggs to enroll in school, make restitution to the business and not go there in the future, records showed.

Staggs and a juvenile were charged in the crime, which occurred about 6 p.m. Dec. 13, 2012, Naperville police Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said.

The incident occurred in a strip mall on the 1800 block of Wehrli Road in the University Heights neighborhood. Cammiso in 2013 declined to identify the business in question.

Staggs that evening acted as “the wheel man” in the burglary, waiting in his car while the juvenile went inside the business, Cammiso said. Employees were on duty at the time, “but they were distracted with other duties” and did not immediately notice the youth, he said.

The juvenile swiped $80 worth of coins from the counter. Cammiso said a subsequent police investigation led to Staggs and the youth being identified as the burglars.

Staggs surrendered on Jan. 16, 2013 at the police station. His accomplice was charged as a juvenile with burglary.

An examination of court documents indicated Staggs had no prior criminal record in DuPage, Kane and Will counties. The status of the juvenile’s criminal case could not be immediately learned.
