Matthew Morris (known as MattyB) is a seasoned rap artist who has been in the music business for the past four years. And he is only 11 years old.

“I was only 7 years old when I uploaded my first video on YouTube and it has grown to one billion views in four years,” said MattyB about his cover version of “Eenie Meenie,” a song by Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber. Since that first song, MattyB has uploaded several videos of cover songs and some original songs.

MattyB, who will perform on Aug. 23 at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, has become an Internet sensation with more than 2.5 million YouTube subscribers. His social media consists of 6.7 million followers on Facebook and Twitter combined. The young rapper also was one of 21 young music performers profiled in “Billboard Magazine’s” “21 Under 21: Music’s Hottest Minors 2013.” MattyB has performed on several television shows, such as “Today,” “The Wendy Williams Show,” “Dr. Phil” and “Extra,” among others.

But despite all the attention, MattyB just tries to be himself. He lives with his family in Gwinnett County in the Atlanta, Ga., area and will be a fifth grader this fall at a private school in Gwinnett County.

“We only travel about once every six weeks when school is going on,” said MattyB about his concert schedule, “so I never miss school because of music and I never get behind in my schoolwork.

“I think the challenge of chasing my dream of music, as well as baseball, and now starting lacrosse and going to school full-time, is the most challenging because I don’t want to give up anything,” he continued. “My parents say doing it all keeps me normal and is good for me as long as I am enjoying the music and I want to continue and I make good grades.”

His parents also had a part in selecting his MattyB stage name.

“MattyB was a ‘nickname’ given to me by my mom and dad when I was a baby before I ever started rapping,” he said. “My parents say it was just because B rhymes with T. They started calling me Matty first, then

MattyB. When I decided to rap, we all said MattyB rhymes with a lot of words, so we just went with it.”

MattyB’s first interest in music came when he was about 5 years old.

“I was drawn to the beat of hip hop,” he said. “It was Christian hip hop from Toby Mac and some other performers and I would hear that and just wanted to dance.”

And what kind of advice does this seasoned veteran have for other youngsters who might want to get into rap and the music business?

“I would say go for your dreams,” he said, “but have real expectations and don’t stop being normal because it may take longer than you think and when you try too hard, it can keep you from enjoying other things.”
