Boys Golf: Alex Bassetto set to lead way for new-look Benet

Benet: The Redwings have three players back from last year’s fifth-place state team. Junior Alex Bassetto is one of the state’s best.

Metea Valley: The Mustangs will play a rugged schedule, but led by sectional qualifier David Lipan, they should be battle tested by the postseason.

Naperville Central: The Redhawks made it to sectionals last year, and have a deep team led by seniors Ciaran Conroy, Scott Dunsire and Sean Morris back. Naperville North: The Huskies started the season strong behind seniors Griffin Brown, Dayne Nelson and Joe Whang as they look to get back to state.

Neuqua Valley: Seniors Jimmy Roach, Steven Grabowski, Ian Langton and Drew Rouches return from last year’s sectional qualifiers.

Waubonsie Valley: Longtime assistant Eric Flodberg inherits a very young team from former coach Dave Owles, who is concentrating on coaching girls basketball.

When Benet boys golf coach Dan Nagis decided that he was going to step down after last year’s run to fifth place in Class 3A, he turned to an old friend for a replacement.

Marty Gaughan had Nagis on his staff during his lengthy run as the Redwings boys basketball coach, which started in 1989.

Though Gaughan hadn’t done golf since he was the head coach at Niles Notre Dame 28 years ago, he came on board.

“He knew I loved golf, so he asked me if I would be interested,” Gaughan said. “It worked out perfectly. I couldn’t be more excited. It’s a great opportunity. They’re great kids. I’m looking forward to it.”

Gaughan is inheriting a group that made a memorable run last year, with three of the key players returning. Most notably, junior Alex Bassetto, who finished 21st individually at state last year, returns. He is one of the top players in the Chicago area.
