Inspired to share their family recipe for pizza, Kim Paetschowk and Heather Drake, along with extended family members, opened Slice Above in far southwest Naperville. They offer carry out, dine-in and delivery seven days a week.
“Slice Above is different than your regular big chain pizza places as we are an independent pizzeria that vows to make our food fresh, with the best ingredients, consistently every time,” Drake says. “We have been established to allow families a place to enjoy an affordable meal with an atmosphere of a warm and friendly environment. We also hope to provide a dining place for students to feel welcome after school events or activities to enjoy a pizza and socialize.”
After one of the owners’ parents passed away, she felt that opening this restaurant and naming it Slice Above was a great tribute to her parents. Not limited to pizza, the menu includes Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago hot dogs, appetizers, salads, and chocolate chip pizza or gelato for dessert. Their motto: Slice Above, “Made Granny’s Way!”

JOE Naperville, which opened in April, brings contemporary women’s apparel and accessories from established and emerging designers to the heart of downtown Naperville.
Although the name JOE Naperville might seem related to our city’s founder, Joe Naper, it actually was derived from one of the store’s owner’s names.
“The inspiration behind JOE Naperville stemmed from a pure love of fashion, and the desire to express, share and make it accessible to others,” says Jin Kwon, one of the owners. “We embrace trends but don’t rely on them, and are always on the look-out for great designers who offer a fresh and beautiful perspective on apparel and accessories.”
She says they try to select items that will be wardrobe staples, while also incorporating fun, edgy and unique pieces. They try not to carry more than a few of the same items. New pieces arrive every week.
Hours: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday
Bye, bye ice cream
Two gone, coming
— more to come
They have come and they have gone. Both Haagen Dazs and The Corner Shoppe have occupied and vacated 2835 Showplace Drive, Suite 103, in the Naperville Crossings shopping plaza in southwest Naperville. Why? We’ve tried to find out with little response. What we do know is each served as an ice cream parlor as well as offered other specialties.
The Sun inquired with the leasing company about a future tenant for the space and received the following:
“We are working on another deal for the former Haagen Dazs/Corner Shoppe space, and we’ll contact you if and when that deal gets completed,” said Jaime Platt, senior leasing representative, Mid-America Asset Management. “We did recently sign a lease with Tide Dry Cleaners, and we’re close to finalizing a lease with TCBY for a new two-tenant outlot building at the center.”
It appears two more businesses will be coming to Naperville Crossings soon. Keep reading Comings & Goings for updates about what’s opening next.
