Conscious Bean Coffee is a product of a North Central College student-run business, NCC Best. The Arabica bean coffee not only tastes good but is the culmination of fusing ethical business practices with environmentally protective production. And students get the opportunity to apply their skills outside an academic setting.
“Students get practical experience in a major, globally traded commodity. Unlike reading about it in a book, we are involved with coffee from seed to cup,” explains Erick Frandin, accounting and management major, president of NCC Sife (Students In Free Enterprise, also known as Enactus, to which NCC’s Best belongs,) for the 2013 academic year.
About seven years ago, the NCC Sife began the Conscious Bean Coffee project, comprising of annual visits to San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala, continuing direct trade relationships with local farmers and sharing this product with the local market in Naperville.
“We purchase from a grower association of about 400 small-plot family farms. Shade growing minimizes the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. We roast the green beans locally so that a significant portion of the profit stays here,” Frandin adds.
Buy their efforts at the Jewel-Osco on West Ogden Avenue. “We like to support local effort,” says Jerry Fox, store director. “It’s a coffee with a story,” adds Jim Davis, assistant store director.
