A 51-year-old man who dragged a woman out of a downtown Naperville bar last month and then nearly hit at least two police officers with his Jeep has been sentenced to 100 days in DuPage County Jail.
John P. Jones, of Aurora, was arrested on 14 criminal and traffic-related charges that included aggravated battery, aggravated assault of a peace officer and domestic battery. That followed the late-night Aug. 3 incident in a parking area behind Potter’s Place, at 29 W. Jefferson Ave.
Paul Darrah, spokesman for DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin, confirmed Jones pleaded guilty to an amended charge of aggravated assault/threat to specified persons with a motor vehicle. The other counts were dismissed in exchange for that plea, Darrah said.
DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Daniel P. Guerin on Monday accepted Jones’ plea and sentenced him to jail.
Darrah said Guerin also placed Jones on two years of probation, ordered him to undergo counseling and assessed $792 in fines and costs.
Police last month said a Potter’s Place employee about 11:39 p.m. reported seeing Jones drag a woman out of the building.
Jones cursed the members of the police bicycle patrol unit who were sent to investigate the disturbance. Sgt. Lou Cammiso said Jones left the woman behind and got into his dark-colored Jeep Cherokee.
Cammiso said Jones backed the Jeep up recklessly, “putting some of the officers in danger” of being struck by it, “and then took off out of the lot.”
Police curbed the Jeep on Jefferson Avenue near Webster Street and arrested Jones there.
The woman was not seriously injured. Cammiso described her as being Jones’ “on-and-off girlfriend.”
Court records showed Jones since 2001 has received at least 20 traffic tickets from Naperville, Hinsdale and Warrenville police and 11 from law enforcement agencies in Will County.
He was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service work and placed on supervision, after being convicted of a June 2008 misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing police in Naperville, records showed.
