The DuPage Senior Citizens Council chose a Star Wars theme for its 12th annual Volunteer Celebration on July 8 at the Diplomat West in Elmhurst. Attendance topped 300 this year, reflecting the growing base of volunteer support for DSCC’s programs serving seniors throughout the county since 1975.

Guests were treated to a buffet brunch and, according to volunteer coordinator Cathy Jordan, were “mesmerized” by the entertainment provided by The Royale Polynesian Revue. Raffle prizes also were donated by local businesses.

Each of DSCC’s nutrition sites recognized a “Volunteer of the Year,” and Karen Petrus of Bloomingdale was named the “Volunteer of the Year” for DSCC for her life-saving efforts involving a senior who had suffered a stroke.

Awards also were presented in the categories of Chore Days and Well Being & Safety. Nineteen individuals received “Ambassador Club” Awards for volunteering 250 hours or more in the past year.

DSCC is always seeking volunteers looking to make a positive difference in their community, either through delivering “Meals on Wheels,” completing well-being checks, or assisting in fundraising efforts. Experience is not required and training is provided. Contact Jordan at 630-620-0804 or visit DSCC’s website at www.dupageseniorcouncil.org

The DuPage Senior Citizens Council is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization, dedicated to helping seniors live with safety and dignity.
