Greenest thumbs of them all

This summer’s bruising drought and heat haven’t kept the thumbs from showing their green.
The Naperville Community Gardeners recently announced the winners of their 32nd annual Flower, Vegetable and Garden Show, Aug. 18.
These gardeners earned “best of class” honors:
Annual/biennial: Wanda Wohead, gerbera daisy
Perennial: Rosemary Steltzer, hosta flowers
Gladiolus/summer bulbs: Barbara Jones, elephant ear
Roses: Carol Beagarie, shrub rose
Dahlias: Nick Papadolias, dahlia “Kelvin floodlight”
Potted plants: Shirley Brockman, jasmine
Vegetables, bush type: Wanda Wohead, Japanese eggplant
Vegetables, root types: Tom Campbell, onion “Candy”
Vegetables, vines: Wanda Wohead, squash “Patty Pan”
Vegetables, tomatoes: Tom Campbell, tomato “Nebraska wedding”
Herbs: Carolyn Finzer, potted rosemary
Fruits and melons: Tom Campbell, cantaloupe “Hearts of gold”
Artistic arrangements and art: Susan Neufelder, fairy garden
Youth: Claire, zinnias
And these awards also were given:

The club meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of the month — except July and December, and when the day falls on a holiday — in the fellowship hall at Knox Presbyterian Church, 1105 Catalpa Lane, Naperville. The annual banquet replaces the November meeting. Visit napervillecommunitygardeners.org.
