For Carol Graham, a picture has always said a thousand words. Graham, 43, has been a professional photographer for four years and chronicles her pictures and experiences on her blog Photography by Carol Graham.
As a Naperville resident, Graham scouts the town and local areas for the best places to photograph her subjects, which are predominantly people. She studied at North Central College, and still has mentors and friends through the school.
“Photography is my passion. I lose myself in it,” said Graham, who started her blog as a resource to keep in touch with clients.
Most of Graham’s photos are taken outside, where Graham derives inspiration. The natural lighting is a dream for a photographer, and it allows the subject to interact with their surroundings. The outdoor environment also allows Graham to discuss the photo shoot with her readers. During a recent session at the Riverwalk, Graham and her clients struggled with the uneven grounding and tree roots. However, these burdens were not evident in the picture.
“I like to give a more realistic view of how photography goes, whether it’s hard, bad or funny,” Graham said.
Graham also shares her location choices with readers, which can range from a barn in Plainfield to an alley in downtown Naperville. Her passion for photography extends to her locations as well; she is constantly looking for new places to set up shots.
“I look for places that aren’t overused, something unique and authentic,” Graham said.
Graham describes in her blog how the different locations are picked based on the family and their personality. One adventurous family climbed a tree for a picture and scaled a bridge to get the perfect shot. Graham captures their personalities in her pictures and often has repeat customers, allowing her to get to know her clients.
“My favorite thing about photography is the interaction. I love being artistic with other people,” Graham said.
