Tom Jurgensen has a devotion for film that shapes the way he views the world around him. Jurgensen, 23, is a lifelong Naperville resident whose interest in cinema developed at a young age. As a recent graduate from Columbia College, Jurgensen chronicles his work in 3D modeling and motion graphics on his blog, Standard Content.
“An important initiative of the blog is aggregating and linking to other web users who have inspired or helped me overcome technical challenges that are common to people in my line of work,” Jurgensen said. “The Internet is teeming with information, but a lot of it is misleading or just outright useless. I depend on people who practice a degree of quality control with the information they come across, and it is my goal to effectively reciprocate.”
Despite his youth, Jurgensen already has built an impressive résumé. Jurgensen was a contributing compositor for the documentary “Head Games” and provided motion graphics for Verizon FiOS commercials. He is working on visual effects for a documentary by CNN Films, “Girl Rising,” and single-handedly created a political campaign ad during the 2012 election season.
“The work I do is very stimulating because it’s often a form of problem solving that could be accomplished in a dozen different ways,” Jurgensen said. “By its completion, you can look back on it and feel proud and easily add it to your portfolio.”
Readers will be able to view Jurgensen’s work as well as his take on new technologies in the industry and those available to consumers. He discusses topics varying from how to get a job in motion graphics to 3D printers. Jurgensen’s blog, not surprisingly, contains a plethora of visual media such as pictures and videos.
Jurgensen’s bright future will eventually lead him to California, where he aspires to work on feature films doing both production and post-production.
