Lucas Mitzel’s love of sports goes beyond the typical fandom. Mitzel, 23, is an aspiring sportscaster who chronicles his love of sports on his blog Confessions of a Sportscaster.
“Sportscasting gives me an opportunity to really enjoy something I love: watching and playing sports,” Mitzel said. “It also allows me to share that love and passion with people in the surrounding community and world.”
Mitzel, an Aurora native and North Central College graduate, says blogging helps him stay connected to his community.
“Blogging has allowed me to share some great stories of Aurora’s proud athletic history, whether it be stories of the first football program in Aurora’s history to win a state football title in Aurora Christian or my getting to coach against University of Connecticut star and former East Aurora superstar Ryan Boatright when he was still at Herget Middle School,” Mitzel said.
Readers of Confessions of a Sportscaster will stay up to date on local sports, including both high school and college, but also major sports leagues. As a sportscaster, Mitzel has a perspective on sports unique to his industry.
“I think that as a sportscaster, you have to be a student of the game you’re calling. Especially if you’re calling a game on the radio, you have to paint a picture of what’s going on in the game since there’s no picture to accompany your words,” Mitzel said. “On both radio and TV though, in addition to describing what is going on, you also have a responsibility to explain the ‘why.’”
When Mitzel isn’t blogging, he can be found as the public announcer for North Central College’s women’s basketball team.
