No one deserves to go hungry — and that includes Fluffy and Fido.

Sensing that the bond between people and their pets only grows stronger as the years pass, the DuPage Senior Citizens Council three years ago established a program designed to prevent older residents from feeling forced to forfeit their furry friends when economic strife comes to roost. The We All Love Our Pets initiative provides basic nutrition for dogs and cats who live with Meals on Wheels recipients in the county.

“As living expenses continue rising and economic recovery remains sluggish, many seniors choose to share their own food with their ‘furry friends’ rather than abandon what are often their only companions,” the council wrote in a press release.

The program, which has a waiting list, recently had a boost when the Banfield Charitable Trust provided a $1,000 grant to help keep the kibble coming. More help would be welcomed with a wag (or a purr), however. Contributions from individuals and pet stores are gratefully accepted. To offer a donation of funds or pet food, call the council at 630-620-0804.
