COD moves Naperville summer youth programs to ‘the yellow box’

The College of DuPage is moving its youth education summer programming in Naperville to Community Christian Church.
The new location, at Rickert Drive and Ogden Avenue, is also known as “the yellow box” because of its distinct yellow outer walls. The building will provide twice as much programming space. The summer offerings include enrichment programs for grades 1 to 8, Leadership Training Academy for teens age 13 to 15 and the popular Talent Search program for grades 3 to 12.
“For years, we have been holding our youth programs at the Frontier Campus,” said Georgia Madden, continuing education program coordinator. “Naperville ‘yellow box’ is a beautiful facility that allows us to expand our offerings based on feedback about programming needs.”
Enrichment program classes focus on academic and language skills, developing an appreciation for art and opportunities to explore technology. Classes run weekly in the mornings and afternoons on Mondays to Fridays, with early and late supervision available for students staying the entire day. Camps begin Monday for grades 3 to 5 and grades 6 to 8 and Aug. 6 for grades 1 and 2. Madden said each Enrichment Program class is guaranteed, so as long as one child enrolls, the class will run.
Leadership training focuses on helping students age 13 to 15 develop decision-making, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays in two-week intervals on June 18-28, July 2-12, July 16-26 and July 30-Aug. 9.
Counselor training is centered working closely with the summer day campers ages 13 to 15 to organize and lead age-appropriate activities under the supervision of a camp aide. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays in two-week intervals on June 18-28, July 2-12, July 16-26 and July 30-Aug. 9.
The talent search program provides challenging academic experiences for gifted students in grades 3 to 12. Subjects include honors math, honors English works, Latin, world geography and a variety of enrichment classes. Sessions begin Monday. Math and honors English were added at parents request, Madden said.
