Ten enter Council race as filing period opens

At least two incumbents and eight challengers are serious about serving on the Naperville City Council for the next two years.
When the filing period began at 9 a.m. Monday, council members Paul Hinterlong and Doug Krause were among 10 people waiting to submit completed nominating petitions.
Those with them at the Municipal Center included Kevin Coyne, Jeff Davis, Wayne Floegel, Thomas Glass, Bill Habel, John Krummen, Jo Malik and David Wentz.
City Clerk Pam LaFeber will conduct a lottery among the 10 hopefuls, to establish the order in which the names will appear on the ballot.
“Ballot order is typically determined by the order in which individuals file their packets, so for those in line on the first day prior to the opening of the clerk’s office, they are all considered as filing simultaneously,” city spokeswoman Kate Houlihan said in an email. “The lottery is therefore a fair way to determine the ballot order.”
Twenty-eight residents pulled packets, but not all of them necessarily will submit completed petitions before the filing period ends Monday. Councilwoman Judith Brodhead received a packet and has said she would like to keep her seat, but she did not file on the first day.
The terms of Brodhead, Krause and Hinterlong are set to expire this spring, as well as that of Kenn Miller, who announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term.
Because the city will shift to a district/at-large representation mix in 2015, all of the terms are for just two years.
If at least seven more candidates file nominating packets, a primary will be scheduled in February to reduce the field to 16.
