Man sentenced for breaking into vehicles in Naperville

The first of two men who were charged last fall with breaking into and looting four vehicles in Naperville has been sentenced in that case.
Nicholas J. Cox, 18, of Chicago’s south side, had originally been charged with felony burglary. He instead pleaded guilty in DuPage County Circuit Court to a reduced charge of criminal trespass to vehicles, according to court records.
Judge Blanche Hill Fawell sentenced Cox to 32 days in DuPage County Jail, records indicated. Cox spent 16 days in the jail following his arrest, and with day-for-day credit for good behavior, has already completed that term and been released.
Fawell on Dec. 20 also ordered Cox to serve 10 days in the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program, or SWAP, records showed. She also placed him on two years of probation.
Naperville police on Oct. 18 arrested Cox and a friend, Bobby L. Battle, with the help of an unidentified eyewitness.
Sgt. John Westlove in October said the witness saw two men “acting suspiciously” at two locations on the city’s north side. The witness followed them and alerted police via telephone, Westlove said.
Cox was arrested that evening near the Jewel-Osco store at 127 E. Ogden Ave. Battle was arrested soon after near the Fourth Avenue Metra Railway commuter train depot, 105 E. Fourth Ave.
Police linked Battle and Cox to two vehicular burglaries on the 100 block of East Ogden Avenue and two others on the 700 block of East Ogden Avenue. Westlove said police found money, wireless telephones, chargers and other stolen property in the men’s possession.
Battle, 22, also of Chicago, remains in jail and is scheduled to appear Jan. 15 in court.
