Discussion of concrete recycling plan postponed

Updated: February 10, 2013 5:59PM

The Will County Land Use Committee Tuesday postponed discussion of a controversial plan for a concrete recycling facility near Naperville.

The committee will now discuss the issue Feb. 11.

Boughton Materials Inc. is seeking a zoning change and special permit for a concrete recycling facility at its quarry at 22750 W. Hassert Blvd. in Wheatland Township.

A group of homeowners associations in the southern end of Naperville is petitioning the Will County Board to reject the proposal.

The Will County Coalition for Responsible Industrial Activities sent a letter to the board in the name of 14 homeowners associations urging the board to deny BMI’s petition to rezone 20 acres at its site for the project.

Among the residents’ concerns are health hazards from the potential handling of materials with absestos and other environmental issues.

But company representatives maintain the proposed operation would be safe and won’t be dealing with any materials containing asbestos.
