Former North counselor pleads guilty to sex abuse of student

A former high school counselor at Naperville North High School has pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual abuse in a case involving a female student at the school.
John Carbonaro, 35, of Warrenville, entered the plea in front of DuPage County Judge Blanche Hill Fawell Tuesday just prior to the start of a bench trial.
The plea is the result of allegations that in the summer of 2010, Carbonaro became involved in an improper relationship with a female student under the age of 18. During the relationship Carbonaro inappropriately sexually touched his victim. The sexual abuse occurred at Carbonaro’s home.
In February 2011, a third party informed school officials about the relationship between Carbonaro and his victim. Authorities at the school immediately contacted the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. An investigation into the matter conducted by the DuPage County Children’s Center resulted in charges against Carbonaro and ultimately his guilty plea.
“As a trusted member of the high school’s staff, Mr. Carbonaro used his position to sexually abuse his young victim,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “He cared nothing for his victim and betrayed the trust placed in him by the victim, the school and the victim’s parents. I would like to thank the authorities at Naperville North High School for bringing this matter to our attention in such a timely manner as well as Assistant State’s Attorneys Anne Therieau and Enza LaMonica as well as Children’s Center Investigator Boris Vrbos for their outstanding work on this case.”
Carbonaro will be sentenced on Feb. 19.
